Incredibly GRATEFUL for 50 Years on This Earth

I have friends who don't like the idea getting older, and dread the big milestone numbers like 40, 50, 60, and so on. They consider themselves as being "middle aged" or "over the hill" or "senior citizens," and it's all said with a negative tone. They don't like being reminded that their life didn't turn out the way they thought it would. They regret the things they did, or didn't do; and they feel sad. They are still looking for their "purpose."

The way I see it, life is a journey. It is full of good times and hard times . . . and its ALL good. Why? Because I truly believe God has each one of us here on this earth for a reason - and understanding that reason (or purpose) is not as complicated as you might think. The important thing is to accept how everything you experience in life - good or bad - can be used to help you learn, to grow, to encourage others, and (most importantly) to point others to Christ. Basically, the idea is glorifying God in everything you do. That is a purpose you can be proud of.

I am incredibly grateful God has granted me 50 years on this earth. I am grateful I survived cancer (twice!), and I'm looking forward to the gift of more years, and of more service to Him.

Take a quick walk with me down memory lane as I share a few of my birthday photos from past years. . . .

Photo of the Week #18: See You Later, Dad

For the month of May, I took an unexpected break from blogging. The reason? I was saying goodbye (or rather, "see you later") to my wonderful dad, and then began trying to adjust to the new normal without him here on this earth. It has not been easy but, with God's help, my family and I are slowly adjusting with the strength given to us from above.

This photo was taken sometime within the 2 weeks my dad was at home in a hospice bed. Among other things, his liver was failing, and we all knew his "time" was getting closer; but, even at the end of his earthly life, it was such an encouragement to see him sharing the love of Jesus with us. As he spoke to us, we know he was trying to make sure he would be seeing his family again someday in Heaven. For example, at one point, Dad asked me directly, "What will you say to Jesus when you meet Him?"

I confidently answered, "I will thank Him for saving me from my sins. And, then I will also thank Him for giving me a dad and a mom who took the time to teach me about Jesus."

Although I miss my dad terribly, I have felt the prayers of others, and truly feel at peace, knowing he is in a better place, and that I will see him again someday. His favorite song by The Booth Brothers is "Look for Me at Jesus' Feet." I certainly plan on looking for him there when it is my turn to leave this world behind. I hope you will be able to join us.

Please watch this 5-minute video tribute to my dad, made by my brother, Daniel. This was played during Dad's memorial service on May 20th. And, if you need more information about becoming a Christian and want to be sure you have a right relationship with God, please take a look at: WHY WE NEED SALVATION.)

SIDE NOTE:  In the photo you can see a little toy figurine attached to Dad's watch. When he first came home on hospice, he asked for something from one of his grandkids that he could hold next to his heart. He loved his grandkids dearly with unconditional, unending love.

500th Post on "He Holds My Right Hand"

I have been blogging for about 8 years, and this post is the 500th post! I have written about many different topics over the years, including devotionals, hymn studies, ways to encourage others, my cancer journey, autism, tourette syndrome, guest bloggers, book reviews, and more. It has been fun, and a huge learning experience for me in many ways.

Thanks so much for reading. I hope you have been blessed in some way by at least one of my posts. Below you will find links to some of the most popular posts that have been published here. I listed two from each year...

A Quick Update on Moving

It was a year ago today when I wrote:  GOD WILL BE WITH US WHEREVER WE GO.  I mentioned how my husband had taken a new job in December 2015, and we were anticipating moving to a different town 50 minutes away. So far, that move has not happened (which I am actually happy about) but that's about all I can share about it. Only God knows what the future holds, and we will wait to see what happens. But, no matter what, we continue to believe He will be with us wherever we go (or wherever we are).

15 Years Ago On 9-11-01

15 years ago today...

I was home with my husband who was off work that day. Our 3-year-old daughter was at school. David turned on the news and watched as the 2nd plane flew into the World Trade Center. He called me in see what was happening, and it was an unbelievable sight.

Obtaining Legal Guardianship for Our Adult Special Needs Child

County Courthouse
Our daughter, EL, has turned 18, and it is a time full of mixed emotions for us. Happy as we celebrate her life and all the accomplishments she has made thus far. But, also a bit disheartening as we watch other girls her age becoming independent young women. We know that type of independence will not happen for our EL. She will always need some sort of supervision, as she is not capable of making important life and medical decisions on her own. With that in mind, David and I had to start the process of obtaining legal guardianship of her and her estate. It is somewhat strange that we, as her parents, need to become her legal guardians. But, in the government’s eyes, she is now considered an adult at the age of 18 and, therefore, presumed to be capable of making important decisions, as well as accepting adult responsibilities in full. So, if she doesn’t have a legal guardian to make the important decisions on her behalf, then there could be a disastrous outcome.

I want to share our experience with you of how we are obtaining legal guardianship, to maybe help prepare other parents of special needs children who will be walking this same road in the future. This has been all new territory for us, and there has been a lot of paperwork involved. But, it isn't as daunting as you might think. Just be sure you have a good attorney working with you and for you. FYI: There is a way to do all of the paperwork and petitioning on your own but, if you are not familiar with doing this, I would not recommend it. Our attorney was able to get certain things waived that would not have happened if David and I had done the petitioning on our own. Plus, having an attorney makes it more reassuring to know that things are being done correctly.

So, here’s a brief summary of our experience so far:
1.  At the start of the year, we knew this was the year of transition, so we called around to several different lawyers in our area to see which ones were willing to accept a guardianship case. We finally found one, and went to his office to consult with him and get the ball rolling. But, there wasn’t much else we could do at that time. We had to wait until 2 months before her 18th birthday before taking the next step.

2.  Step two was a very important step. I made an appointment with EL's Pediatrician,  took her in to get a physical, and asked the doctor to fill out the papers drawn up by our attorney. The paperwork included essential information from the doctor explaining the necessity for us to obtain plenary guardianship of EL. (NOTE: Plenary guardianship is when the court gives the guardians the power to exercise ALL legal rights and duties on behalf of a ward [i.e. a disabled person], after the court makes a finding of incapacity.)

3.  Several weeks later, we had another meeting with our attorney, who drew up papers for David and I to sign. These were signed in order to petition the court for temporary plenary guardianship. This type of guardianship is good for up to 60 days, during which time a final hearing is held to determine the need for ongoing (permanent) guardianship.

4.  We went to court two days after EL’s 18th birthday. My husband gave testimony on the witness stand, our attorney represented us well, and temporary plenary guardianship was granted to us with no problem.
5.  The next step is coming soon, and that is to have EL served a summons by the Sheriff's department requiring her to appear in court. It needs to be given directly to her, even though she really has no idea what it's all about.

6.  After the summons, we will await our final court date (scheduled in about a month), and that will be for granting us permanent plenary guardianship.
If you have any questions for us about any part of this process, please contact me (or leave your questions in the comments section) and I will do my best to answer them. It's important to note that we are in Illinois, as each state has different procedures for granting guardianship. It will be important for you to find out what the requirements are for your state.

For Illinois residents, you can find a GUIDE TO ADULT GUARDIANSHIP IN IL at the IL Guardianship & Advocacy Commission website.
